MARS - MAAP Accident Response System
FAI developed the first MAAP Accident Response System (MARS) software system in 1987. MARS supports nuclear power plant operation as an on-line engineering tool which monitors the current plant conditions and interprets these to determine if there is a departure from the desired operating parameters. The following illustration provides an overview of the MARS concept:

Immediately following a plant upset condition MARS can be used to:
- diagnose the plant responses (reasons for the upset) based on the total set of measurements reported;
- track the plant state to detect any evolving change in the upset condition;
- use the tracking mode to dynamically initiate the MAAP code with the information gain from items 1 and 2.
- with the faster than real time calculational capabilities of the MAAP, project future plant states at 100 times faster than real time.
