Training

FAI offers product training programs and seminars designed to help customers achieve their competency-based learning objectives. Our classrooms feature advanced audio-visual equipment and computer-based training terminals. With the combination of the numerous experiments that have been performed at FAI and the broad knowledge of other key experiments, and chemical and nuclear plant experience, training essentially provides hand-on experience in a simulated performance environment. Some of the courses offered are:

  • Free Calorimeter Users Group Training Seminar
Our Free Users Group Training Seminar will help you get the most from FAI equipment. We offer “hands-on’ training in the lab. Training will be tailored to suit your particular needs.

  • Relief Systems Design Course (Click here to download course information and registration form.)
Unlike other emergency vent sizing courses offered, this three day course emphasizes “hand” calculation methods capable of giving safe but not overly conservative relief system designs with emphasis on reactive systems and the role of two-phase flows. Benchmarking of these methods and equations will be illustrated through practical design examples covering condensed phase (vapor, gassy and hybrid systems) as well as gas phase (gas and dust deflagrations) reactions. This course is normally, held in the spring and fall of each year.

  • A Safe and Practical Approach to Relief Sizing for Reactive Systems
This one day, on-site seminar, presented by Hans K. Fauske, D.S., will help customers avoid expensive ERS redesign and decides for themselves what is adequately safe. This seminar will include: a methodology overview (DIERS, API, ASME AND NFPA); discussions on runaway reaction classification (condensed phase reactions and vapor phase reactions) and vent sizing tools (condensed phase reactions-vapor, gassy and hybrid systems and vapor phase reactions (gas and dust deflagrations). Dr. Fauske served as the principal investigator and leader of the DIERS research project team.

  • MAAP Training4 Entry Level Training Course
This four-day course give users information on MAAP methodology, input, output, parameter file preparation, and “hand-on” training courses. This course is designed for the novice users of MAAP.

  • MAAP Training4 Analyst Certification Training Course
This five-day course is more for the experienced MAAP user. Extensive use of MAAP4 and a good knowledge of MAAP4 is necessary for this course. This training course is theoretically-based, and is intended to provide in-depth training of the MAAP code. Input file preparation, parameter file preparation, and output interpretation are covered. The last day includes a Certification Test that participants MUST pass in order to receive a Certification Certificate.

  • Training on Waterhammer Phenomena
This two-day course offers training on waterhammer phenomena for NPP engineering staff and includes discussion on the following: The Basics; Conditions Which Setup Waterhammer Events; Examples of Significant Waterhammer Events and Simplified Ways to Analyze Potential Waterhammer Events.
