Ryan Vanston, Manager, Technology Development Group II System & Risk Applications, Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Jacky Shoulders, Nuclear Services Manager, Fauske & Associates, LLC
It is important to know how to analytically model a system and related phenomena and then validate the analytical model with experimental data. Fauske & Associates, LLC (FAI) has a long history of thermal hydraulic testing and analysis and state-of-the-art laboratories that can be used for full-scale industrial testing services of power plant components and systems.
This high speed videoshows an air bubble rising in a 6-inch diameter pipe with downward flowing water. In pressurized water reactors, gas intrusion into emergency core cooling systems can cause a number of issues including pump stall, delayed emergency coolant injection, and water hammer. At both our Westinghouse and Fauske & Associates, LLC test labs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Burr Ridge, Illinois; thousands of experiments have been conducted to understand the two-phase air/water transport processes in complex piping systems. Matt Swartz, PhD, describes the flow in the video as countercurrent with the bubble breaking apart due to entrainment in the highly turbulent shear region beneath the bubble. The results of these tests helped our customers solve an industry-wide issue.
